Federal gas tax
Do we want another President to bait us? McCain and Clinton want to repeal the 18 cent federal gas tax. They call it tax holiday. Well, if you work in road construction, mass transit or even want to clean up under ground leaking tanks, it will be NO holiday.
Obama is right about the gas tax. We need to see that he will make gas cheaper by strengthening the U.S. dollar. McCain and Clinton will continue to say they will ease our pain. Yet, long term they don't know how to make us strong again.
Here is a site on the history of the gas tax: http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/infrastructure/gastax.cfm
You might think politicians just want to take our dough, but here is another site that thinks McCain is wrong on the gas tax: http://transportation.house.gov/News/PRArticle.aspx?NewsID=603 Since Clinton just decided it was popular, she isn't mentioned.
"Instead of providing needed relief from high gas prices, McCain’s proposal would cost jobs, worsen congestion, compromise safety, and simply provide another windfall opportunity for the oil companies.
The McCain proposal is nothing more than an attempt to find a simple sound bite instead of a realistic solution. It brings to mind the words of H.L. Mencken, “There is always an easy solution to every human problem—neat, plausible, and wrong.” "

increase the federal gas tax
I take the opposite approach. Let's increase the federal gas tax to $1 per gallon. Use it to pay for infrastructure. It also will encourage conservation, mass transit, lower pollution, etc. Force the automobile manufacturers to significantly increase the mpg, etc. It can be done, but there needs to be an economic incentive to do so.
And why are all the hybrids nothing more than versions of cars that already get good gas mileage? My truck only gets 15mpg and I am not happy about that. However I need a truck with 4WD where I live. Where is the truck with decent gas mileage?
