There really are two countries within the USA. Maybe the best thing is to break the country up into two countries.

If Sarah Palin is for real, as in really going to run for President, is this country for real?

Maybe I'm not giving her
Maybe I'm not giving her enough credit--or am giving the voters too much credit--but I just CANNOT see Palin winning the R nomination in '12. She just seems too polarizing to the electorate (as fair or unfair as that may be). That was the same problem Hillary had in '08--yes she had her fair share of supporters, but there was a portion of the electorate who strongly-disliked her, fairly or unfairly. Candidates with large "negative" numbers combined with the way convention delegates are selected, I believe, makes winning enough delegates difficult for those candidates.
Of course, Palin appears pretty Clintonesque in the way she seems to be able to dodge the political shots so if anyone could overcome such negative numbers, maybe she can. But I just see her making too many gaffes improvising speeches on the campaign trail. Her handlers should take a page out of BOs book and not let her speak without a teleprompter!
Even in the most liberal
Even in the most liberal states, there are still 30% of the people who vote for conservatives. Most states have well over 35% of the people voting for the loser in major races.
Vermont has a Republican governor. California has a Republican governor. Maine has two Republican senators. Massachusetts has a Republican senator
North Dakota has a Democratic senator. Kansas has a Democratic governor.
The reason that the Democrats are going to get killed in this election is not that different than the reason they won big in 2008. The economy sucks.
The Democrats in the US are probably to the right of the Conservatives in Britain. They are probably to the right of every ruling government in the world. (The UK has a coalition with the Liberal-Democrats who are to the left of the US democrats.)
There are not two countries in the US. There is a bunch of very conservative people and a group of fairly conservative people.
